What I do is this:
1. Get Artio component for SE friendly URLs
2. Get SEF patch for Joomla that fixes some of the weaknesses of joomla.
3. Get a sitemap like Joomap for instance
4. I write articles so I write intro text and main text. In main text I hide the title in the parameters on the right and make my own H1 title.
5. Get some meta tag cloud module an put it in the footer.

Well, joomla is quite SEO-friendly. If you don't forget to enable the SEO-friendly URLs and install a sitemap, that may be more than enough.
What you should really care about is your content: it MUST be fresh, original and attractive.

Hello,
I have Joomla with Open SEF Installed , however , when I turn Open Sef ON , the article links go to .html , and when I click on them I get Server Error "Page not found" whats wrong ???
so I did turn it off until i figure that out

for those wanting good url's then this is the best free one you can get at the moment, http://www.artio.cz/ otherwise buy Sef advanced i have this installed on a few sites and it works really well
