if you wanna save disk space and want to edit pictures quickly, I suggest something like Gimp or Photo Filter...
But I prefer using Adobe Suits(Photo shop, Illustrator, Fireworks etc.), you can really manipulate every layer of pictures you want to edit using this soft wares..

I use Gimp. It takes a bit of getting used to but it really is just as good as Photoshop, and it's totally free.
